Sculpting the Potential
My sculptural practice is deeply informed by the philosophical concept of Hyle (Ancient Greek: ὕλη). In Aristotelian philosophy, Hyle represents the pure potential—the undifferentiated, formless primary matter that inherently possesses the capacity to receive and embody form.
Just as Hyle is the latent potential that is actualized by Form, my sculptures explore the transformation of raw material into a defined presence. This philosophical framework guides my process, focusing on the moment where a material, devoid of specific identity, is imbued with meaning and becomes a tangible expression. It’s an exploration of the inherent possibilities within matter, and the active role of artistic intervention in bringing those possibilities into concrete existence.
