The Emergence of Form from Formlessness

My second body of work directly engages with the philosophical concept of Hyle – the pure, undifferentiated potential. These pieces explore the dynamic tension between form and formlessness, capturing the sensation of liberation that arises from escaping an indeterminate state.

The central question in this series is: Is the release from formlessness merely the adoption of another form, perhaps becoming a new ‘Hyle’ itself? In these works, a new Hyle is emerging from a preceding, formless Hyle, illustrating a continuous process of becoming. My sculptures embody this perpetual flux, depicting forms in the very act of birthing themselves from an antecedent potential, highlighting the cyclical and transformative journey of material and meaning.
